What is the disability application timeline in Colorado?

The process of applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Colorado can be lengthy, often involving multiple steps and long waiting periods. Knowing the general timeline can help you plan ahead and avoid delays.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

1. Filing the Initial SSDI Application

Estimated time: 1 to 6 months

You can apply online, by phone, or at your local Social Security office. Once submitted, SSA will review your application to determine if you meet the basic eligibility criteria (work credits, non-substantial gainful activity, etc.).

SSA then forwards your application to Colorado Disability Determination Services (DDS) for a medical review. This step includes:

  • Reviewing medical records
  • Requesting exams if necessary
  • Contacting your doctors for more information

Outcome: Approval or denial of your claim.

2. Reconsideration (If Denied)

Estimated time: 1 to 4 months

If your initial claim is denied, you can request reconsideration within 60 days. This is a full review of your claim by someone who was not involved in the first decision. In Colorado, only a small percentage of applicants are approved at this stage, but it's a necessary step if you plan to appeal further.

3. Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Hearing

Estimated time: 12 to 18 months after requesting

If reconsideration is also denied, you can request a hearing before an administrative law judge. This is often the most successful stage for claimants, but also the longest wait. In Colorado, hearing wait times are typically 12+ months, depending on the backlog.

At the hearing, you can:

  • Present new evidence
  • Bring witnesses (medical or vocational)
  • Be represented by an attorney

4. Appeals Council and Federal Court (If Necessary)

If the ALJ denies your claim, you can request a review by the Appeals Council, which can take 6 months or longer. If still denied, your final option is filing a lawsuit in federal court.

Average Total Timeline in Colorado

From initial application to hearing decision, the full process can take 18 to 30 months or more. This varies depending on:

  • How complete your application is
  • Whether appeals are needed
  • SSA and DDS backlog in your area
