What if I move while on SSDI in Colorado?

If you’re receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and plan to move—whether within Colorado or to another state—it’s important to notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) promptly. While your SSDI benefits won't stop due to a move, updating your information ensures that your payments continue without interruption and that SSA can reach you if needed.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Do SSDI Benefits Change When You Move?

For most SSDI recipients, your monthly payment does not change when you move, because SSDI is based on your work history and earnings record, not your financial need or location. However, if you’re also receiving SSI (Supplemental Security Income), your benefit may be affected since SSI is based on financial need and cost of living can vary by state.

What You Need to Do When You Move

1. Report Your New Address

Notify SSA of your new address as soon as possible so they can update their records. This helps avoid issues like:

  • Missed correspondence
  • Delayed or misdirected payments
  • Risk of benefit suspension

2. Update Your Direct Deposit Information (if needed)

If your banking details change along with your move, update your direct deposit information through:

  • Your My Social Security online account
  • Calling 1-800-772-1213
  • Visiting your local SSA office

3. Update Medicare or Medicaid Info

If you’re on Medicare, it generally follows you across states without interruption.
If you’re on
Medicaid, you will need to reapply in your new state of residence, as Medicaid eligibility and coverage differ by state.

How to Report a Move to SSA

Online

  • Use your My Social Security account at ssa.gov

Phone

  • Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778)

In Person

  • Visit a local Social Security office—either in Colorado before you move, or in your new state after the move

When Should You Report Your Move?

It’s best to report your new address as soon as you know it, or no later than 10 days after the move. This keeps your contact information current and prevents disruptions in benefits.
