Understanding SSDI vs. SSI

SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance):

• Based on your work history and earnings
• Requires you to have paid Social Security taxes
• No asset or income limits (except earned income while disabled)

SSI (Supplemental Security Income):

• Based on financial need
• No work history required
• Strict income and asset limits

When Can You Receive Both SSDI and SSI?

You may qualify for concurrent benefits if:

• You meet the medical requirements for disability
• Your SSDI monthly payment is low (usually due to limited work history or low wages)
• You meet the financial limits for SSI (as of 2025, individuals must have less than $2,000 in assets; couples, less than $3,000)

Example: If your SSDI benefit is less than the federal SSI limit (currently $943/month for individuals), SSI may supplement the difference to help you meet basic needs.

How to Apply for Both SSDI and SSI in Colorado

You don’t need to file separate applications. When you apply for disability through the SSA:

• They will automatically determine if you’re eligible for both programs
• You’ll need to provide medical records, work history, and financial information

Things to Keep in Mind
