Can part-time workers get disability in Colorado?

If you’re working part-time and living in Colorado, you may be wondering if you still qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The short answer is: yes, part-time workers can be eligible for disability benefits—but there are some important details you need to understand to determine if you meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) criteria.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Eligibility for Part-Time Workers in Colorado

Being a part-time worker doesn’t automatically disqualify you from receiving disability benefits. However, the SSA will look closely at:

Your Earnings

The SSA uses a measure called Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). In 2025, if you earn more than $1,550/month (non-blind) or $2,590/month (blind), you may be considered capable of gainful work and not eligible for SSDI.

If you work part-time but earn below the SGA threshold, the SSA may still consider you disabled if your condition limits your ability to work full-time or in a consistent manner.

The Nature of Your Work

Even if you're earning below SGA, the SSA will examine:

  • The type of work you're doing
  • How many hours you work
  • Whether the work demonstrates you could do more substantial work
  • If accommodations are being made that wouldn’t exist in a typical job

If your part-time work shows you can’t maintain full-time employment due to your disability, that can support your claim.

SSDI vs. SSI for Part-Time Workers

SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance):

  • You must have a sufficient work history, typically 5 out of the last 10 years full-time.
  • Part-time workers may qualify if they’ve previously worked enough and paid Social Security taxes.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income):

  • Based on financial need, not work history.
  • If your income and assets are low, and your disability prevents full-time work, you may qualify even with limited or no work record.

Filing a Strong Claim as a Part-Time Worker

To improve your chances:

  • Be transparent about your part-time job when applying.
  • Include documentation showing how your condition limits your hours, tasks, and reliability.
  • Get a statement from your doctor explaining why you can’t work full-time.
  • Include pay stubs or wage verification to confirm your income is below SGA.
