Can I get Medicare with SSDI in Colorado?

Yes, if you qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Colorado, you are also eligible for Medicare—but not immediately. There is a waiting period, and understanding the timeline and benefits is important for planning your healthcare coverage.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

When Does Medicare Start After SSDI Approval?

Once you're approved for SSDI benefits, you will become eligible for Medicare coverage after a 24-month waiting period. This means your Medicare benefits begin two years after your SSDI entitlement date, which usually starts five months after your disability began.

So in total, it can take about 29 months from the onset of disability before Medicare starts—though some conditions may allow for faster access.

Exceptions to the Waiting Period

You can skip the 24-month Medicare waiting period if you have:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS): Medicare starts immediately with SSDI approval
  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): You may qualify for Medicare a few months after starting dialysis or getting a kidney transplant

What Does Medicare Cover for SSDI Recipients?

Once eligible, you’ll be enrolled in:

  • Medicare Part A – Hospital insurance (automatically included)
  • Medicare Part B – Medical insurance (you can opt out, but most choose to keep it)
  • Optional Part D – Prescription drug coverage
  • Medicare Advantage (Part C) – Optional plans that combine Parts A, B, and usually D

Paying for Medicare on SSDI

While Part A is free, you’ll usually pay a monthly premium for Part B, and additional premiums for Part D or Medicare Advantage if you enroll. If your income is low, you may qualify for Medicare Savings Programs or Extra Help with drug costs.

What to Do While Waiting for Medicare

Because of the 24-month wait, you may need interim health coverage. Options include:

  • Medicaid (if you meet income limits)
  • Private insurance through the Marketplace
  • COBRA coverage from a previous employer

You should plan ahead so you’re not left without medical coverage during the gap.
